In the ever-evolving landscape of document scanning and processing, staying ahead means constantly innovating. Tungsten Automation understands this, which is why they've rolled out their latest update: Tungsten VRS Elite 5.3.0. This update brings forth a host of new features and improvements aimed at enhancing productivity, flexibility, and performance for users.

What's new with Tungsten VRS Elite 5.3.0:

OCR Option in Desktop Productivity Features
One of the standout features of this update is the inclusion of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in Desktop Productivity features. With OCR, users now have the ability to make scanned documents searchable when scanning directly to various Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word, as well as to Windows Desktop or a folder in File Explorer. This addition significantly enhances the usability and accessibility of scanned documents, empowering users to easily find and extract valuable information.

Tungsten OmniPage Barcode Engine Support
Version 5.3 introduces support for the Tungsten OmniPage barcode engine (OmniPage), further expanding the capabilities of VRS Elite. OmniPage brings advanced barcode recognition capabilities to the table, allowing for more efficient and accurate document processing workflows.

Render Grayscale PDFs as Grayscale TIFFs
In the previous versions, Tungsten VRS defaulted to rendering grayscale PDFs as bitonal TIFFs during import, which could sometimes lead to reduced image quality, particularly when dealing with text on solid gray backgrounds. With version 5.3, users now have the option to configure VRS to render grayscale PDFs as grayscale TIFFs during import, preserving image quality while still maintaining manageable file sizes.

To use this feature, following the instructions below:
1.    Open ModConfig.ini.
2.    In the [KDLWrapper] section, set the value for the GrayscaleOutput property to one of the following:
0: Disables grayscale TIFFs. Bitonal TIFFs are rendered during import. (Default)
1: Disables bitonal TIFFs. Grayscale TIFFs are rendered during import.
3.    Restart Tungsten VRS to have the changes take effect.

Support for File Paths up to 255 Characters

Saving scanned documents to a file is now more flexible with support for file paths up to 255 characters in length. This enhancement eliminates the frustration of encountering file path limitations and allows for more descriptive and organized file naming conventions.

VRS License Server Activation via HTTPS

Security is paramount, especially when dealing with sensitive documents. With VRS Elite 5.3.0, VRS License Server activations are now supported via HTTPS with TLS 1.2 or higher, ensuring secure communication between client and server.

Certified Device Compatibility

Lastly, Tungsten VRS Elite 5.3.0 brings certification for several Ricoh devices, including the Ricoh fi-8820, fi-8930, and fi-8950, for use with VRS Elite Workgroup and Production editions. Component installers for these devices are readily available, further streamlining the setup process.
