With staff shortages affecting nearly every industry, how to make their workforce more productive is a key concern for today’s business leaders. But, how can you measure productivity, what are the challenges affecting productivity, and how can you counter them? Keep reading to find out.

 

What is productivity?

The Cambridge English Dictionary defines productivity as: “The rate at which a company makes goods, usually judged in connection with the number of people and amount of materials necessary to produce the goods.” (Cambridge Dictionary)

A productive organisation is able to maximise its outputs against its inputs.

 

Challenges affecting employee productivity

  1. Access to the right tools and equipment
    One of the greatest threats to employee productivity is not having the right tools or equipment to perform their job effectively. The quality of these tools is also important – if an employee is working from an (old) laptop which is low on disk space, every task will take longer and they will become frustrated.
     
  2. Poor training is a key challenge impeding employee productivity. As organisations needed to switch to support hybrid work during the height of the pandemic (and beyond), they invested heavily in cloud apps. Today, employees typically use 3-5 apps to complete a single work task. However, in many cases, they have not been trained effectively and are not using the software to its full potential.
     
  3. Lack of a structured onboarding process
    Many companies were already struggling to onboard employees effectively before the pandemic and hybrid working added fuel to the fire. With employees now having to learn many new software programs, onboarding can take much longer, according to the Harvard Business Review, the average onboarding program lasts 90 days.

     
  4. High employee turnover
    According to recruiting vendor Workable, it takes between 20-30 days to hire a new employee. Add to this the aforementioned time to onboard and it can be a year until an employee reaches their full potential (Gallup). If an employee then leaves within or shortly after a year, this can have dire consequences on an organisation’s productivity.
     
  5. Distractions and lack of employee motivation
    If employees have to spend a long time trying to find and access the software tools they need to do their job, they risk becoming distracted or unmotivated.


    Other challenges include ineffective management and a lack of clear direction or objectives.
     

How can you measure productivity?

In traditional industries such as manufacturing, it is much easier to measure workforce productivity. For example, Ford can look at how many cars are produced per quarter and compare this with the cost of production. However, with an increasingly digital workforce, it can be difficult to measure productivity.
